2027 MATCHUP PREVIEW

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP vs. COLTS NECK

GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL

A CHANCE TO CLOSE THE GAP.

When Freehold Township and Colts Neck meet again in 2027, the Patriots will face one of the toughest opponents from their inaugural season.

The two Freehold Regional programs met in late April 2026 with Colts Neck emerging with a 19–0 victory.

For Freehold Township, it was another lesson during a season filled with firsts.

For Colts Neck, it was part of a breakthrough first season that established the Cougars as one of the top teams in the Central Division.

Now comes Year Two.

And another opportunity for the Patriots to show how far they've come.

THE 2026 MATCHUP

COLTS NECK 19
FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP 0

Freehold Township entered the matchup looking to rebound after a difficult loss to Shore Regional.

Instead, Colts Neck took control.

The Cougars built an early advantage and used big plays on defense and special teams to keep the Patriots from establishing offensive momentum.

Freehold Township battled throughout the afternoon but couldn't break through, eventually falling 19–0.

It was one of the Patriots' toughest tests of their inaugural season.

COLTS NECK'S BREAKOUT SEASON

Colts Neck quickly developed into one of the surprises of the Central Division in 2026.

After dropping its first two games against established programs Red Bank Catholic and Trinity Hall, Colts Neck caught fire.

The Cougars won eight consecutive regular-season games, including victories over Marlboro, Manalapan, Shore, Ranney, Neptune and Freehold Township.

They finished the regular season near the top of the Central Division and established themselves as a program to watch heading into 2027.

SAME START. DIFFERENT PATHS.

There's another connection between these programs.

Freehold Township and Colts Neck were both part of the wave of new Freehold Regional girls flag football programs that took the field for the first time in 2026.

Both were learning.

Both were building.

Both were creating traditions from scratch.

But by the end of Year One, Colts Neck had emerged as one of the division's strongest teams.

For Freehold Township, that makes the Cougars an important measuring stick.

A DIFFERENT PATRIOTS TEAM

The Patriots who face Colts Neck in 2027 will have something the 2026 team didn't have:

Experience.

A full varsity season.

An offseason to develop.

Returning players who understand the speed of the game.

And the memory of what happened the first time these teams met.

The goal isn't simply to erase a 2026 loss.

It's to demonstrate that the gap has closed.

KEYS TO THE REMATCH

Start Fast — Colts Neck controlled the first half of the 2026 meeting. Freehold Township needs to establish itself from the opening possession.

Create Offensive Rhythm — The Patriots were held scoreless in the first matchup. Sustaining drives and getting playmakers into space will be critical.

Eliminate the Big Play — Defense and special teams helped Colts Neck take control in 2026. Freehold Township can't give the Cougars easy opportunities.

Win in the Open Field — Against an athletic opponent, sound flag pulling will be essential.

Play With Confidence — Colts Neck's 2026 record makes this a challenge — and exactly the type of game Freehold Township needs to win if it wants to take the next step.

THE MEASURING STICK

Year One was about establishing the program.

Year Two is about raising expectations.

Colts Neck showed in 2026 how quickly a new program can develop into a contender.

Now Freehold Township gets another opportunity to measure its own progress against one of the teams that set the standard during that first season.
