A NEW FRHSD MATCHUP.

There is no rematch.

No score to settle.

No result from 2026 to revisit.

When Freehold Township and Howell take the field in 2027, the Patriots and Rebels will have an opportunity to write the first chapter of a new girls flag football matchup between two Freehold Regional programs.

Both teams enter the game with a full varsity season behind them.

And both will be looking to take another step forward in Year Two.

TWO PROGRAMS. TWO FIRST SEASONS.

Freehold Township and Howell traveled different paths during the 2026 season.

The Patriots competed in the Shore Conference Central Division, finishing their inaugural campaign 3–5.

Howell competed in the South Division and finished 5–5 overall and 4–5 in division play.

They didn't meet during the regular season.

That changes in 2027.

HOWELL

Howell's first season provided plenty of experience for a developing program.

The Rebels navigated a South Division schedule that included some of the Shore's strongest teams, including Barnegat, Central Regional and Pinelands.

By the end of the season, Howell had earned five victories and established a foundation to build upon entering 2027.

For Freehold Township, that makes this a new challenge against a program it hasn't previously faced in a regular-season game.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP

The Patriots enter 2027 with their own year of experience behind them.

Freehold Township's inaugural season included the first victory in program history against Manalapan, decisive wins over Ranney and Marlboro, and competitive battles against some of the Central Division's top programs.

Year One was about establishing the program.

Year Two is about building on it.

And games against opponents like Howell provide another opportunity to find out how much progress has been made.

AN FRHSD CONNECTION

This matchup carries something extra.

Freehold Township and Howell are both part of the Freehold Regional High School District.

Different schools.

Different communities.

But plenty of familiarity.

Players know players.

Students know students.

Families know families.

That gives a first-time varsity matchup the potential to quickly feel like a rivalry.

KEYS TO THE MATCHUP

Learn Quickly — Unlike many of Freehold Township's 2027 opponents, there is no previous regular-season matchup with Howell to study. The Patriots will need to adjust as the game develops.

Set the Tone Early — Against an unfamiliar opponent, establishing momentum from the opening possession can make a difference.

Create Space — Freehold Township will look to get its playmakers into the open field and force Howell to make difficult flag pulls.

Protect the Football — Turnovers can swing momentum quickly, particularly against an opponent you're seeing for the first time.

Win the FRHSD Battle — Both programs will understand there is a little more attached to this one than another game on the schedule.

In 2027, they finally get their chance.
